What city do we envision?

3rd PENSAR LISBOA

ESSENTIA is launching THINK LISBON - 3rd Edition next 8th July at 6 PM.

Now as a webinar, due to the current limitations to the previous “face to face” reflection forum format, the focus is the same and it is reinforced:

WHAT CITY WE ENVISION?

The history of the city was visibly marked by the earthquake which, on the morning of November 1, 1755, almost completely destroyed the old city of Lisbon that was then living the remains of its opulence. The Marquis of Pombal declared a return to "ancient simplicity", and so it happened, in a way that architectural language materialized, making Lisbon the last of the old cities and the first of the modern ones.

In a much more subtle way, for invisible and immaterial, but not less powerful, the Covid-19 pandemic is revealing a new era for cities. If cities are the people in physical and affective proximity, then it is the cities that are at stake when the order is to keep distance. There is no risk of extinction, but an opportunity of metamorphosis. The time is ripe to rethink cities, help them leave the cocoon and emerge differently. Lisbon can make way again.

All over the world we hear about all these utopian takes. Cities will become magically green, miraculously healthy. There is going to be no cars. There is going to be no air pollution. There is going to be more bike lanes. The reality is that cities will look pretty much like the way they did. They are going to be something like we see today, with a few subtle changes. The sensitivity of those unseen changes will make the difference.

Being seen, recognized, and acknowledged is crucial to human experience; social visibility is vital to our happiness, and when it diminishes, we suffer. We all want to be recognized. The gaze is vital to human connection. It makes sense that the words one uses in a romantic relationship are “we are seeing each other.” We live to see and be seen. Yet, we still close our eyes to kiss, to flavour, to listen, to feel something deeply. The power of the unseen can be just as essential.

The transformation is happening, new behaviour’s, new priorities, criteria, and values. A global accelerator has been introduced in the transformations already in place and new challenges are emerging every day, but...

The necessary speed of the response should not prevent a multidisciplinary reflection. The unique opportunity that this moment offers can build a response that transforms the actual and future generations lifestyle.
